The Capitol Police Department

The Vermont Capitol Police Department was established in 1999, within the office of the Sergeant-At-Arms, by the Vermont Legislature (2 V.S.A. ยง 70).

Responsibilities include enforcement of Vermont state law, investigation, patrol, crime intervention through proactive police presence, general police duties, as well as protection and security of the Vermont State House, members of the General Assembly, dignitaries, visitors, and staff.

Chief David A. Janawicz was the first Chief of the Vermont Capitol Police. Chief Janawicz built the Department from the ground up, serving as the only officer from 1999 until 2001. Chief Janawicz passed away on September 28, 2008.
