State of Vermont

Senate Chamber

Montpelier, Vermont

Joint Concurrent Senate Resolution

By Senators Doyle, Cummings and Scott,

By Representatives Anderson of Montpelier and Kitzmiller of Montpelier,

S.C.R. 51.  Senate concurrent resolution congratulating Montpelier High School principal Peter Evans on his designation as the 2008 Vermont Principal of the Year.

Whereas, serving as a public high school principal is an extremely challenging task that involves working in different, and at times conflicting, academic, administrative and representational capacities, and

Whereas, the bottom line for every principal is helping to foster the best possible educational opportunity for each student in the school and creating an ideal learning environment to facilitate that objective, and

Whereas, each year the National Association of Secondary School Principals, in cooperation with its state‑affiliated organizations, including the Vermont Principals’ Association, designates a principal in each of the 50 states as that state’s principal of the year, and

Whereas, the Vermont Principals’ Association has selected Montpelier High School principal Peter Evans as the 2008 recipient of this distinguished award in the state of Vermont, and

Whereas, Peter Evans is a fitting choice for this award as he is a principal who maintains effective and collaborative working relationships with both faculty and students, and

Whereas, unlike many principals, he serves as a teacher advisor in order to continue the regular and direct daily contact with students that principals often lose when they leave the classroom for the administrative office, and

Whereas, Peter Evans’ less-than-stellar academic profile in high school bore no indication of his future career, but through working with a potter, he developed a passionate interest in art that eventually led to a love affair with education, and

Whereas, his own educational quest for academic advancement has resulted in his completion of a doctoral degree in education at the University of Vermont, and

Whereas, his admirers include both Montpelier school superintendent Steve Metcalf and schoolboard chair John Hollar, who are both pleased with the rising level of achievement that Montpelier High School students have demonstrated, and

Whereas, before major school decisions are made, Peter Evans will consult the faculty to assist him in gauging the best way to proceed, and

Whereas, voter faith in the school system, of which Peter Evans is a primary representative to the community, was exhibited when a $1.46 million bond was adopted at town meeting in March 2008, and

Whereas, in September Peter Evans, along with similarly recognized secondary school principals from the other 49 states, will be honored at a special celebration in Washington, D.C., now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates Montpelier High School principal Peter Evans on his designation as the 2008 Vermont Principal of the Year, and be it further

Resolved:  That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Peter Evans at Montpelier High School.
