S.C.R. 46. Senate concurrent resolution congratulating QNEK Productions on its 15th anniversary.
Whereas, the home of QNEK Productions (QNEK) is the historic Haskell Opera House located on the international border in Derby Line and Stanstead, Quebec, and
Whereas, the company’s binational status was formalized in 2005 when QNEK Productions was invited to join the Quebec Drama Federation and became the only international theater company in the state of Vermont, and
Whereas, QNEK Productions educational endeavors include the Academy for Children in Theater (ACT 1) for youngsters ages 9–13; the apprenticeship program for students ages 13–19; the QNEK scholarship for graduating seniors; and the over $10,000.00 in scholarship monies awarded to students in the Northeast Kingdom, and
Whereas, QNEK offers loans for props, sets and costumes to local high schools and provides them with technical support for their productions at no cost to the schools, and
Whereas, the educational and outreach roles will broaden in 2008 with the inauguration of QFEST, which this year will focus on the presentation of already written 10-minute plays; and the prospective plan for 2009 is to guide students at several area high schools in the development of plays that will be featured at each high school in a play tournament, with the winner of each tournament invited to perform on the Haskell’s stage and the ultimate winning students being awarded college scholarship funds, and
Whereas, QNEK has involved Vermonters at the other end of the age spectrum through a 2005 Vermont Women’s Foundation grant that financed Memoirs, an unusual project that encouraged senior women in the Northeast Kingdom to write their personal stories that were interpreted and musically enhanced for a World Premier performance, and
Whereas, the proceeds from sales of the book containing these women’s stories were donated to support the dialysis project at North Country Hospital; and other charitable donations from performance revenues have been donated to breast cancer awareness activities; and this year, QNEK plans to donate money toward the installation of much needed air-conditioning in the Haskell House, and
Whereas, QNEK founding director, Lynn Leimer, was the winner of the 2004 Vermoscar Award for outstanding contributions to the arts in the Northeast Kingdom, has served as a drama adjudicator at the State of Vermont Drama Festival and at Montreal’s Fringe Festival, and is the secretary of the Memphremagog Arts Collaborative which QNEK joined in 2007, and
Whereas, QNEK’s main stage repertoire has expanded from one production in 1993 to four in 2008, beginning with season opener Dearly Beloved on April 25, the Mikado in August, Nunsense in September, and concluding with a bonus, Christmas Belles in November, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly congratulates QNEK Productions on its 15th anniversary, and be it further
Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Lynn Leimer.
