State of Vermont

Senate Chamber

Montpelier, Vermont

Joint Concurrent Senate Resolution

By Senators Condos, Flanagan, Miller, Lyons, Racine and Snelling,

By Representatives Aswad of Burlington, Atkins of Winooski, Bissonnette of Winooski, Donovan of Burlington, Keogh of Burlington, Larson of Burlington, Lorber of Burlington, Pearson of Burlington, Weston of Burlington, Wright of Burlington and Zuckerman of Burlington,

S.C.R. 38.  Senate concurrent resolution congratulating the Burlington Seahorses’ 2008 Division I championship and undefeated boys’ basketball team.

Whereas, the Burlington High School Seahorses boys’ basketball team began the 2007–2008 hoop campaign as the proud winners of two Division I championship titles in the last three seasons, and

Whereas, this record of basketball prowess served as the foundation for the Seahorses to write a new page in Vermont high school basketball history, and

Whereas, each team that played Burlington High School on the hardwood court during the regular season left disappointed as the Seahorses built an apparently invincible record of continuous victories, and

Whereas, Burlington High School earned the top seed in the playoff competition, and ultimately the Seahorses were paired against number two Rice Memorial High School for the Division I crown, and

Whereas, before a crowd of over 3,000 avid local basketball fans gathered at the University of Vermont’s Patrick Gymnasium, these two local teams played the dream game of the high school basketball season, and

Whereas, when the two teams adjourned for their midgame break, Burlington held a respectable but not insurmountable 25–18 lead, and

Whereas, during the second half, the Seahorses widened their lead considerably; and, at the final whistle, Burlington had defeated Rice Memorial 49–33, had earned the 2008 Division I championship title, and had become the first Vermont boys’ basketball team in a quarter of a century to go undefeated, and

Whereas, the 2007–2008 Seahorses, including Adam Chicoine, A J Dusablon, Tyler Barron, Cody Sourdiff, Clancy Rugg, Shane Norris, Oliver Davis, James Hale, Lester Alexander, Kevin Cherry, Schuyler Mitchell and Joe O’Shea, were thrilled to be members of this historic team, and head coach Matt Johnson and assistant coach Jeanne Hulsen served as outstanding mentors, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the Burlington Seahorses’ 2008 Division I championship and undefeated boys’ basketball team, and be it further

ResolvedThat the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Matt Johnson at Burlington High School.
