House concurrent resolution in memory of Steve Hall of Hyde Park

Offered by:  Representatives Martin of Wolcott, Nease of Johnson, Peltz of Woodbury, Scheuermann of Stowe, Smith of Morristown and Westman of Cambridge

Offered by:  Senator Bartlett

Whereas, Marie Agnes Rolland was born in Toledo, Ohio on January 15, 1903, and

Whereas, in pursuit of a college education, she traveled east to attend Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, and a roommate called her Steve, a name she retained for the balance of her amazingly long and productive life, and

Whereas, after graduating from Smith, working in New York City as a copy editor, and marrying, she and her husband moved north to Lamoille County, and Hyde Park, and

Whereas, for many years Steve Hall was an English teacher at Lamoille Central Academy where she introduced a generation of students to the literary masters of the English language and served as the school’s drama coach, and

Whereas, in 1952, when the Reverend John Knight of Hyde Park established the Lamoille County Players, Steve Hall became the company’s first director, and

Whereas, Steve Hall’s distinctively dramatic flair, to say nothing of her insightful appreciation of the theatrical world and ability to massage aspiring thespians’ egos, proved the ideal combination to bring rousing applause when the curtain would fall on the company’s productions at the Hyde Park Opera House, and

Whereas, she continued in the director’s role for approximately the next 30 years, long beyond the age when most persons have retired even from leisurely avocational pursuits, and

Whereas, she was the mother of a son, Eli Hall, and

Whereas, her recent death at the age of 105 marked the passing of a noted and cherished personality in Lamoille County, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly marks with sadness the death of Steve Hall, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to the Lamoille County Players.
