Whereas, Vermont’s soil and climate provide a botanically conducive location for the raising of potato plants, and one of the premier potato growers in the state of Vermont is the Peaslee family, including Representative Janice Peaslee, which since 1930 has been the proprietor of Peaslee’s VT Potatoes, and

Whereas, this Vermont-owned family business is situated in Guildhall on a diversified 500‑acre farm, 120 acres of which are dedicated to potatoes, and

Whereas, the Peaslee family plants potatoes each May, harvests them in September, and then sells them from the fall until planting time the following spring, and

Whereas, Peaslee’s VT Potatoes are sold in stores throughout New England and New York State as well on a direct retail basis to consumers, and

Whereas, among the many types of Peaslee’s VT Potatoes are round whites, featuring white/buff skin and white flesh in a number of different varieties, including Green Mountain, known as the old timer’s favorite, Irish Cobbler, Katahdin, Kennebec, Shepody, Superior—the Peaslees’ favorite early variety—Norwis with its more pale-yellow flesh, and Yukon Gold, with its yellowish skin and flesh, and

Whereas, Peaslee’s red potatoes include the Chieftain, with its bright red skin and white flesh, the dark red Norland, with smooth red skin and white flesh, the Red Pontiac, featuring dark red skin and white flesh, and the Russet Norkotah, sporting dark russet skin and white flesh, and

Whereas, the Russett Burbank blue potatoes are known as the fun potato and are a great source for creating potato salad, and

Whereas, each potato has been harvested under the watchful eye of either a Peaslee family member or one of the farm’s carefully trained staff, and the potatoes are carefully packaged in a sturdy three-ply bag featuring the distinctive Peaslee’s VT Potato trademark, and

Whereas, the Peaslees represent the best in Vermont family agriculture and merit legislative recognition for their nurturing of this much beloved vegetable that many chefs transform into a delectable delicacy, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly is pleased to honor Peaslee’s VT Potatoes as among Vermont’s finest potatoes, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Representative Janice Peaslee and to Peaslee’s VT Potatoes in Guildhall.
