House concurrent resolution honoring the Vermont Council on World Affairs for its facilitation of Vermonters’ increased understanding of world affairs and international visitors’ knowledge of Vermont

Whereas, in 1952, America’s first ambassador to the United Nations and U.S. Senator Warren R. Austin along with a group of other distinguished Vermonters founded the Vermont Council on World Affairs (VCWA), and

Whereas, the VCWA is one of 86 nonprofit, nonpartisan, and independent affiliates of the World Affairs Councils of America, and

 

 

 

 

Whereas, the mission of the VCWA is to “promote an awareness and understanding of world affairs” through its programs that include public forums on key foreign affairs issues, the hosting of international delegations and the arranging of seminars and meetings with their professional counterparts in Vermont, working with local educational institutions to develop international affairs curricula and events, and fostering a better understanding of the international business arena among the state’s businesses, and

Whereas, a special component of the VCWA’s activities is its international visitors program, which is coordinated with the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitors program and has included state and federal legislators and senior government officials from South American nations, librarians and archivists from Cambodia, journalists from Sri Lanka, local government officials from Iraq, a delegation of young leaders from Turkey, and many of these international guests have visited the general assembly and met with legislators and officials from the judicial and executive branches, and

Whereas, upcoming planned visits include professional foresters from the Ukraine and a representative of the Indonesian Ministry of Home Affairs who will be studying transparency in Vermont’s state and local governments, and

Whereas, these exchanges are greatly beneficial to the visitors’ and the participating Vermonters’ intercultural understanding, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the general assembly honors the Vermont Council on World Affairs for its facilitation of Vermonters’ increased understanding of world affairs and of international visitors’ knowledge of Vermont, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to the Vermont Council on World Affairs.
