JOINT CONCURRENT HOUSE RESOLUTION

State of Vermont

House of Representatives

Montpelier, Vermont

Joint Concurrent House Resolution

H.C.R. 254

House concurrent resolution honoring Greg McClallen for his 36 years of extraordinary coaching and dedication to Rutland High School’s athletic programs

Offered by:  Representatives Courcelle of Rutland City, Andrews of Rutland City, Flory of Pittsford, Howard of Rutland City, McCormack of Rutland City, McNeil of Rutland Town, Chen of Mendon and Potter of Clarendon

Offered by:  Senators Mullin, Carris and Maynard

Whereas, the success of a high school’s interscholastic athletic program is dependent to a great extent on its coaching staff, and

Whereas, no coach on the Vermont high school scene has earned higher grades, on every possible measurement scale, than Greg McClallen of Rutland High School, and

Whereas, Greg McClallen’s genius is derived from his understanding of adolescent psychology and the fundamentals of the sports he coaches, and

Whereas, this coach’s record of achievement is remarkable for its longevity of 36 years, the 30 state championships and a national title he has helped bring to his school, and the variety of sports in which his mentoring and teaching skills have excelled, and

Whereas, Greg McClallen’s success have included winning teams in girls’ cross country (1980, 1981, and 1983), boys’ track and field (1974, 1975, 1976, 1983, and 2002), girl’s track and field (1981, 1982, 1983, and 1984), boys’ alpine skiing (1987, 1993, 1994, 1997, 1998, 2001, and 2004), and girls’ alpine skiing (1988, 1990, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2007, and 2008), and

Whereas, beyond these state titles, in 1976, the Rutland High School team, under coach McClallen’s expert tutelage, won the New England Championship for alpine and Nordic skiing combined, and

Whereas, special recognition was given to coach McClallen when in 1987 he was presented the National Coach of the Year Award for Skiing, and

Whereas, after his extraordinary career at Rutland High School, which has concluded with the best possible farewell — his girls’ alpine ski team clinching the 2008 state title, Greg McClallen will be retiring at the end of the 2007–2008 academic year, and

Whereas, the city of Rutland honored him, most fittingly, when it designated March 17-23, 2008 as Greg McClallen Week, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly is pleased to honor Greg McClallen for his 36 years of extraordinary coaching and dedication to his student athletes’ personal success and to the vitality of the school’s athletic programs, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Greg McClallen and to the Rutland High School athletic department.
