RESOLUTION AS INTRODUCED 2007-2008

JOINT CONCURRENT HOUSE RESOLUTION

State of Vermont

House of Representatives

Montpelier, Vermont

Joint Concurrent House Resolution

H.C.R. 239

House concurrent resolution congratulating the 2008 Enosburg Falls High School Hornets Division III girls’ basketball championship team

Offered by:  Representative Gervais of Enosburg

Whereas, the Enosburg Falls High School Hornets girls’ basketball team is known for its enthusiasm, perseverance, and successful play as was demonstrated when the team won the 2008 Division III state championship against the Lake Region Rangers, and

Whereas, because the Hornets’ only two losses in the last two seasons were to these same Rangers, the fourth-seeded Enosburg Falls anticipated an exciting northwest vs. northeast match against third-seeded Lake Region in the Division III championship game, and

Whereas, after a weather-related postponement, resulting in an unusual Sunday night state championship game, the two teams rendezvoused at the Barre Auditorium for this much-anticipated contest, and

Whereas, everyone in attendance was treated to a thrilling display of basketball that kept all in attendance on the edges of their seats, and

Whereas, the Rangers scored the opening basket, and while the lead switched sides throughout the first half, the Hornets had narrowed a 25–18 deficit to 25–22 when the halftime break occurred, and

Whereas, by the third quarter’s conclusion, the Hornets held a slight but psychologically important 36–35 lead, and

Whereas, throughout much of the dynamic fourth quarter, the lead changed sides several times as both Enosburg Falls and Lake Region sought to maximize every scoring opportunity, and

Whereas, with only 2:10 remaining in the fourth quarter, Hornet Alexa Johnson passed to teammate Ellen Lussier, who smoothly aimed the orange ball on a 15-foot journey into the basket, giving Enosburg a 44–43 lead and igniting an 8–2 Hornet scoring romp, culminating with a truly well-deserved 50–43 Enosburg victory and the 2008 Division III championship title, and

Whereas, Hornets Jade Desroches, Maria Gleason, Carol Ann Jackson, Alexa Johnson, Lindsey Larivee, Victoria Lombard, Maria Lovelette, Ellen Lussier, and Samantha Pothier responded skillfully throughout this fast-paced championship game, and

Whereas, coach Jay Nichols and assistant coaches Donna Flanders and Stephen Jette instructed the team well on applying the playing techniques that proved essential, and scorekeeper Ashleigh Clark, statistician Kelly Kane, and videotapers Liane Vogel and Callan Tracy were each a valued resource throughout the 2007–2008 season, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the 2008 Enosburg High School Hornets Division III girls’ basketball championship team, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Jay Nichols at Enosburg Falls High School.
