House of Representatives

Montpelier, Vermont

Joint Concurrent House Resolution

H.C.R. 215

House concurrent resolution congratulating Isabelle Briggs, Etta Dean, and Mabel Ward on their half-century of civic service as members of the Cavendish Firemen’s Auxiliary

Offered by:  Representative Shand of Weathersfield

Offered by:  Senators Campbell, McCormack and Nitka

Whereas, the Cavendish Firemen’s Auxiliary was established in order to support the essential public service role of the Cavendish volunteer fire department, and

Whereas, the fundraising events the auxiliary has conducted have helped finance the department’s purchase of new equipment to meet its firefighting responsibilities and keep apace with improving technology, and

Whereas, the auxiliary’s members have provided firefighters refreshments and fellowship while they work, and these support services are always greatly appreciated, and

Whereas, three of the auxiliary’s founding members have now been supporting the department, and the firefighters who are its members, since 1957, and

Whereas, Isabelle Briggs, the wife of the department’s first chief, Arthur Briggs, has held many auxiliary offices and continues to work actively on behalf of the town’s firefighting service, and

Whereas, Etta Dean’s role at the auxiliary focused for many years on the organization’s finances through her service as treasurer, and

Whereas, Mabel Ward has long kept the auxiliary’s minutes in good order as secretary, and her attention has also been directed to the department’s own finances during her service as its treasurer, and

Whereas, these women and their counterparts help assure the viability and continuity of volunteer fire departments throughout Vermont, and their crucial supporting roles are often overlooked and merit praise, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates Isabelle Briggs, Etta Dean, and Mabel Ward on their half-century of civic service as members of the Cavendish Firemen’s Auxiliary, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to each of the women honored in this resolution.
