Whereas, Green Hotels in the Green Mountain State is a public-private program under the auspices of the Vermont Business Environmental Partnership that designates lodging establishments in the state as Green Hotels based on an on-site environment assessment process and the hotel’s adoption of environmental standards and a corresponding management plan that, although unique, is always rigorous, and

Whereas, given the association’s solid record of encouraging environmentally friendly and energy-efficient lodging practices, it decided to formalize these policies, and

Whereas, the approval of this new policy is historic as it represents the first instance that a lodging association in the United States has adopted a green hotel designation requirement, and

Whereas, by December 18, 2007, all association members had completed the on-site assessment and other qualifications for Green Hotel in the Green Mountain State designation, and they now constitute 20 percent of the designated hotels, and

Whereas, On January 2, 2008, a member of the Chester Innkeepers Association launched a new website, www.greenlodgingvt.com, that promotes the association’s commitment to pollution prevention and sound environmental practices, and

Whereas, the Chester Innkeepers Association’s respective lodgings include  Chester House Inn, the Fullerton Inn, Henry Farm Inn, Hugging Bear Inn & Shoppe, Motel in the Meadow, Old Town Farm Inn, Park Light Inn Bed and Breakfast, Popple Fields Bed & Breakfast, Quail Hollow Inn, Rose Arbour Bed & Breakfast, Rowell’s Inn, Stone Cottage Collectables B&B, and the Williams River Inn, and

Whereas, each of these 13 lodging establishments are now using 575 compact fluorescent lightbulbs and 83 water‑saving showerheads; practicing a washing awareness program in 130 guestrooms that allows guests the option to use towels and linens for more than one night, saving 100 gallons of water and three gallons of detergent for every 100 guests; sponsoring a Connecticut River Transit town shuttle bus service; and during 2008, the association will have a recycling bin and other green tips for tourists at the Chester village information booth, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
