House concurrent resolution congratulating Diane Bahrenburg of Colchester on being selected the 2008 Vermont Teacher of the Year

Whereas, since 1979, Diane Bahrenburg, an English teacher at Colchester High School, has been challenging her students, and

Whereas, Diane Bahrenburg has shared her love of language, writing, and ideas with hundreds of students, and

Whereas, she has encouraged her students to engage in public speaking and overcome their fears of speaking before large assembled groups, and

Whereas, Diane Bahrenburg earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota where she majored in secondary school education and English and minored in Scandinavian studies, and

Whereas, from 1996 to 1998, she taught secondary school English at the International School of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and

Whereas, in the year 2000, Diane Bahrenburg earned her master’s degree in education from St. Michael’s College, and

Whereas, she has served as an adjunct instructor at Johnson State College and the University of Vermont and as a presenter, teacher leader, and mentor in various statewide and local professional development capacities, and

Whereas, Diane Bahrenburg is also the founder of Colchester High School Cares, a schoolwide community service program, and acts as the Vermont debate-forensics league coach at Colchester High School, and

Whereas, She was awarded the 1992–1993 and 2006–2007 Colchester Teacher of the Year Awards, and

Whereas, she has again brought great honor to her school by being named the 2008 Vermont Teacher of the Year and will represent Vermont in Washington D.C. in the national teacher of the year competition, that includes an invitation to attend a special White House reception, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates Diane Bahrenburg of Colchester on being selected the 2008 Vermont Teacher of the Year, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Diane Bahrenburg at Colchester High School.
