Offered by:  Representatives Obuchowski of Rockingham, Partridge of Windham, Anderson of Montpelier, Kitzmiller of Montpelier and Milkey of Brattleboro

Whereas, Jay Gordon was a quiet person with a witty sense of humor, who, as befitting his profession as a certified public account, approached his work with great meticulousness, and

Whereas, he was born in Bellows Falls, the son of Eastern European immigrant parents, and Yiddish was the language spoken in their home, and

Whereas, after graduating from Bellows Falls High School, Jay Gordon earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Vermont, and he later continued his education at New York University from which he was awarded a master’s degree in business administration, and

Whereas, in between his undergraduate and graduate studies, Jay Gordon served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force and later in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, and

Whereas, after completing his education and active duty military service, Jay Gordon returned home to Bellows Falls and joined a local accounting firm, and

Whereas, aside from his professional duties, Jay Gordon participated in the civic and political life of his hometown and took an active interest in Democratic Party politics, and

Whereas, in 1964, as election season approached, Jay Gordon, acting on a whim, decided to run against the incumbent, Republican David Anderson, for the office of auditor of accounts, and

Whereas, Jay Gordon entered the race, notwithstanding that a Democrat had never held the position, an incumbent Vermont auditor of accounts seeking reelection had never been defeated, and in Vermont, no one of the Jewish faith had previously been elected to statewide office, and

Whereas, each of these known challenges proved surmountable for Jay Gordon as he defeated the incumbent in 1964 and was again victorious in a 1966 rematch, and

Whereas, Jay Gordon directed the state’s auditing activities with great competence and attention to detail during his tenure, and

Whereas, after leaving office, Jay Gordon remained in Montpelier, resumed his career as a highly respected certified public accountant, and always retained his avid interest in Vermont politics, and

Whereas, after retiring from his accountancy practice, Jay Gordon turned to a new career as a full-time faculty member at Norwich University, and for over a decade, he thoroughly enjoyed teaching accountancy-related courses, and

Whereas, Jay Gordon and his wife, Joan (Plumpton), died tragically in a fatal house fire in Montpelier on the night of December 4, 2007, and

Whereas, their sudden deaths shocked their sons, Harry and David, and their many friends across the state, now therefore be it
