State of Vermont

House of Representatives

Montpelier, Vermont

Joint Concurrent House Resolution

H.C.R. 187

House concurrent resolution congratulating Jean Berthiaume on his receipt of the 2007 Victor R. Swenson Humanities Educator Award

Offered by:  Representatives Minter of Waterbury, Dostis of Waterbury, Hosford of Waitsfield, Grad of Moretown and Donahue of Northfield

Offered by: Senators Cummings, Doyle and Scott

Whereas, starting in 2003, the Vermont Council on the Humanities has presented the Victor Swenson Humanities Educator Award and an accompanying $1,000.00 cash prize to honor an outstanding Vermont humanities teacher and to recognize the council’s first executive director, Victor R. Swenson, and

Whereas, for its 2007 honoree, the council sought a 6th through 12th grade teacher who “inspires his or her students and encourages an appreciation for lifelong learning” and who is passionate about and accomplished as an instructor of “language, literature, history, social studies or other humanities field,” and

Whereas, additional criteria for the award included professional dedication demonstrated through an ability to collaborate with colleagues, a record of personal achievement as an educator, and proven service as a role model to other teachers, and

Whereas, after an intensive review of the many outstanding nominees, the council wisely selected Harwood Union High School faculty member Jean Berthiaume as the 2007 winner of the Victor R. Swenson Humanities Educator Award winner, and

Whereas, Jean Berthiaume graduated from Lyndon State College and earned a master’s degree from the University of Vermont, and

Whereas, his original position at Harwood was as an assistant to the dean of students, in which he exercised his disciplinarian duties most often by integrating troubled students into the school community rather than acting as a heavy-handed punisher of students, and

Whereas, more recently, as a social studies teacher, he has continued the theme of community building through the development of a civics course entitled Creating Sustainable Communities, and

Whereas, Jean Berthiaume is an ideal example of a teacher who has promoted a love of humanities among his students and is a superb choice to receive the Victor R. Swenson Humanities Educator Award, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates Jean Berthiaume on his receipt of the 2007 Victor R. Swenson Humanities Educator Award, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Jean Berthiaume at Harwood Union High School.
