House concurrent resolution congratulating Susan Hennessey on the receipt of a Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award

Offered by:  Representatives Minter of Waterbury, Dostis of Waterbury, Hosford of Waitsfield, Grad of Moretown and Donahue of Northfield

Offered by Senators Cummings, Doyle and Scott

Whereas, in 1987, the Milken Family Foundation established a National Educator Award in order to honor outstanding K–12 educators, and

Whereas, the award focuses on the importance of high-quality teaching in the nation’s elementary and secondary schools and encouraging caring and creative persons to enter the education profession, and

Whereas, the award recipients form networks of educators who serve as a catalyst for improvements in primary and secondary education, and

Whereas, in October 2007, Susan Hennessey, a media literacy specialist at Harwood Union High School, was named as the third Vermont recipient of the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award, and

Whereas, the Vermont department of education nominated Susan Hennessey for this special recognition based on her exceptional educational talent and her inspirational presence in the classroom and with parents and community members, and

Whereas, Susan Hennessey began her teaching career as an English teacher and then found her special calling as a media literacy specialist, a role she fills with great success as the director of the Harwood Union High School library, and

Whereas, under her dynamic leadership, the school’s library has become an important center for innovative technological initiatives and curriculum development activities, and

Whereas, as a member of the department of education’s Vermont professional development network, she has applied her Harwood experience to advise teachers throughout the state on ways to maximize the internet as a positive and beneficial learning tool, and

Whereas, this superb educator was surprised and honored when she was presented the award, including a $25,000.00 cash prize, at an all-school assembly, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates Susan Hennessey on the receipt of a Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Susan Hennessey at Harwood Union High School.
