House concurrent resolution honoring Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports and the participating athletes on its Sugarbush ski team

Offered by:  Representatives Grad of Moretown, Donahue of Northfield and Hosford of Waitsfield

Whereas, individuals with special needs, including those with physical and developmental disabilities, have limited opportunities to socialize in organized group athletic activities, and

Whereas, when group athletic activities do exist for these individuals, it is an uplifting and personally satisfying experience that broadens their lives, and

Whereas, a unique organization, Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports (VASS) was established to provide persons with special needs the chance to participate in both instructional and competitive athletic activities, and

Whereas, VASS supports its programs through fundraising efforts that enable the community at large to participate in fun and competitive events such as its annual ski challenge, and

Whereas, VASS’ diverse athletic programs for individuals with special needs include summertime canoeing, cycling, sailing, wintertime skiing, and year‑round indoor rock climbing, and these programs are conducted at venues throughout the state, and

Whereas, an outstanding example of VASS’ organized activities for persons with special needs is the ski team it sponsors as part of the organization’s Winter Adaptive Snowsports program held at the Sugarbush ski area, and

Whereas, these skiers look forward to their runs down the slope with an enthusiasm that reflects their joy at being outdoors and socializing with their peers in a fun and exciting activity, and

Whereas, they leave with fond memories, new and renewed friendships, and an anticipation of their future visits to the ski area, and

Whereas, the ski team members were participants at a recent winter games event at the Bolton ski area from which they derived great pleasure, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly honors Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports and the participating athletes on its Sugarbush ski team, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Erin Fernandez, executive director of Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports, Eric Bonin, northern program coordinator, and Philip Kellem, Sugarbush ski team member.
