RESOLUTION AS INTRODUCED 2007-2008

JOINT CONCURRENT HOUSE RESOLUTION

State of Vermont

House of Representatives

Montpelier, Vermont

Joint Concurrent House Resolution

H.C.R.  124

House concurrent resolution congratulating the 2007 American Basketball League champion Vermont Frost Heaves

Offered by:  Representatives Valliere of Barre City, Koch of Barre Town, McDonald of Berlin, McFaun of Barre Town and Monti of Barre City

Offered by:  Senators Doyle, Cummings and Scott

Whereas, the idea of establishing a professional basketball franchise, named the Vermont Frost Heaves, in rural Vermont seemed unusual to many of the sport’s seasoned observers, but Sports Illustrated writer Alex Wolff paid no attention to the skeptics, and

Whereas, Alex Wolff’s perseverance and determination resulted in the establishment of the Vermont Frost Heaves as the newest entrant in the American Basketball League, and

Whereas, the Vermont Frost Heaves started playing the 2006–2007 season with a dual home court arrangement divided between the Barre City Auditorium and the Burlington Memorial Auditorium, and

Whereas, the home games played in Barre City have drawn large and enthusiastic crowds, boasting civic pride and placing Barre City on the nation’s basketball map, and

Whereas, the Frost Heaves’ displays of basketball skill enthralled their loyal fans as they cheered the team on to the league championship game against the Texas Tycoons that was played in the friendly confines of the Barre City Auditorium, and

Whereas, although the Texans opened the championship game with a 6–2 lead, this scoring advantage proved to be a fleeting moment of success that would never reemerge as the Frost Heaves soon pulled ahead 8–7 and never lost the lead, and

Whereas, at the first quarter’s conclusion, the Frost Heaves were on top 42‑18, and at halftime held a 79–46 lead, and

Whereas, the Frost Heaves, with fantastic support from their leading scorer Tyrone Levett who slammed 33 points into the hoop, left Texas lost in the Vermont cold as they beat the Tycoons 148–95 to win the 2007 American Basketball League title and finish the season with a 30–6 record, and

Whereas, all the Frost Heaves, including Melvin Creddle, Aaron Cook, Dana Martin, Tyrone Barley, Kerry Lyons, Travarus Bennett, B.J. Robertson, Markus Austin, Kevin Mickens, John Bryant, Kevin Harrington, Antonio Burks, Lester Strong, Tyrone Levett, Johann Collins, and Issa Konare, played magnificently all season long, and

Whereas, head coach Will Voigt and coaches Wayne Laffley, Marvin Safford, and Scott Caulfield pooled their basketball knowledge to the Frost Heaves’ great advantage, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the 2007 American Basketball League champions, the Vermont Frost Heaves, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Alex Wolff in South Burlington.
