Whereas, Carlton Clark spent his boyhood in the Orange County town of Brookfield where he attended elementary school and then attended junior high school in nearby Randolph, and

Whereas, after completing the 8th grade, his family relocated to Sharon in Windsor County, and he enrolled at South Royalton High School where he was an outstanding athlete and from which he graduated, and

Whereas, desirous of serving our country as a member of the nation’s armed forces, he enlisted in the U.S. Army prior to his graduation, and

Whereas, after finishing his high school studies, Carlton Clark completed both his basic and advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and

Whereas, Fort Campbell, Kentucky was his first long-term military station where he served as a combat engineer and became air-qualified, and

Whereas, he was deployed to Iraq for one year at the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom and was injured during his service abroad for which he was awarded a Purple Heart, and

Whereas, after he returned to the United States, his superiors recognized Sgt. Clark’s military and teaching skills and assigned him to the United States Military Academy at West Point to train cadets, and

Whereas, at the conclusion of his first tour of duty, Sgt. Clark reenlisted and was again assigned to Iraq as a member of the 101st Airborne Division, and

Whereas, on Sunday, August 6, 2006, two other soldiers and he were killed when an improvised explosive device hit the Humvee in which they were riding near Baghdad, and

Whereas, Sgt. Clark performed his duties meritoriously, and, in addition to the Purple Heart he was awarded during initial deployment to Iraq, he was also the recipient of an army commendation medal with valor, a bronze star medal, and a second, posthumous, Purple Heart, and

Whereas, he will not fulfill his dream of returning home to pursue his interest in fire rescue, a path he felt strongly about, and

Whereas, Carlton Clark’s parents, Alan and Kathleen Clark, his sisters, Amy Eaton and Jennifer Clark, his grandmother, Jean Clark, and his former high school classmates in Sharon and South Royalton have wonderful and fond memories of this outstanding Vermonter, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly extends its most sincere condolences to the family of Sgt. Carlton A. Clark of Sharon, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Alan and Kathleen Clark in Sharon.
