House concurrent resolution honoring Alice Sturgeon for her community service in Georgia

Offered by:  Representatives Branagan of Georgia and Gilbert of Fairfax

Whereas, for many years, Alice Sturgeon has contributed boundless energy to the well-being of her hometown of Georgia, and

Whereas, the citizens of Georgia have long admired her civic spirit and her compassionate concern for the needs of the town and its residents, and

Whereas, children, both her own and others, have a special place in her life, and, for 25 years, Alice Sturgeon has operated a day care center at her home where many Georgia youngsters spend happy hours of fun and developing their learning skills, and

Whereas, Alice Sturgeon is a devout congregant of the Ascension Parish Roman Catholic Church in Georgia, and

Whereas, her volunteer roles at the church have included serving on the pastoral board and assisting with countless church dinners, including the senior dinner, and

Whereas, Alice Sturgeon’s concern for others’ welfare extends beyond Georgia’s borders, and she has provided meals for Martha’s Kitchen in St. Albans, and

Whereas, aside from her church activities and operating the day care center, she has found time to serve the community in the public sector as a member of the Georgia school board of which she was a member from 1991–1999, and again from 2004–2006, and

Whereas, her school board participation has been thoughtful and constructive during deliberations formulating local education policy, and

Whereas, family has always held a special place in Alice Sturgeon’s life, and she and her husband Mitchell Sturgeon are proud to have raised 10 children, including Michelle, Michael (now deceased), Molly, Melissa, Mary, Matthew, Margaret, Mark, Mead, and Miles, who are known collectively in Georgia as the Ms, and

Whereas, Alice and Mitchell Sturgeon are now the grandparents of nine grandchildren, and

Whereas, this extremely humble woman has a special place in the hearts of Georgia residents, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly honors Alice Sturgeon for her community service in the town of Georgia, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Alice Sturgeon in Georgia.
