Joint Concurrent House Resolution

H.C.R.  56

House concurrent resolution congratulating Jeremy Russo of Rupert on his designation as a national Outstanding Young Farmer semifinalist

Whereas, the national Outstanding Young Farmer Program (OYF), was established in 1951 to recognize the nation’s foremost up-and-coming agricultural entrepreneurs, and

Whereas, in order to be considered a candidate for OYF designation, individuals must be under age 40, have demonstrated progress in their agricultural careers, derive at least two-thirds of their income from farming businesses, utilize soil and water conservation methods, and have made civic contribution both locally and nationally, and

Whereas, in the most recent round of OYF awards, Jeremy Russo of Rupert was honored as one of 25 semifinalists in this stringent competition, and

Whereas, Jeremy Russo is proud to continue a family tradition as the sixth generation to farm in Vermont, and

Whereas, he prepared for an agricultural career by completing the Dairy Fellows program at Cornell University, working as herdsman on a neighbor’s farm, and then securing initial financing with the assistance of the federal  Farm Services Agency, and

Whereas, in 2001, with 12 milking cows in his herd, Jeremy Russo embarked on his farming career and, by 2006, the herd of milkers had expanded to over 90 with 70 replacement heifers being raised for the future, and

Whereas, the farm has become a true family enterprise with his brothers and father pitching in to assist with various aspects of its operation, and

Whereas, he employs a low-input production system and value-added processing, and

Whereas, Jeremy Russo has sought to broaden his agricultural base by operating an organic farmstand and experimenting with cheese manufacturing, and

Whereas, his wife Jennie is a kindergarten teacher who teaches her students about the importance and role of farming in Vermont, and

Whereas, the OYF program made an excellent choice in designating Jeremy Russo as a national semifinalist, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates Jeremy Russo of Rupert on his designation as a national Outstanding Young Farmer semifinalist, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Jeremy Russo in Rupert.
