JOINT CONCURRENT HOUSE RESOLUTION

State of Vermont

House of Representatives

Montpelier, Vermont

Joint Concurrent House Resolution

H.C.R.   2

House concurrent resolution congratulating the 2006 U-32 Raiders Division II boys’ cross-country championship team

Offered by:  Representatives Klein of East Montpelier, Ancel of Calais, McDonald of Berlin and Peltz of Woodbury

Offered by:  Senators Cummings, Doyle and Scott

Whereas, interscholastic cross-country running is always an exhilarating sport testing the individual participant’s stamina and energy to the maximum extent, and

Whereas, the runners sped across the course both to prove their own athletic abilities and to support their team’s overall performance, and

Whereas, the 2006 state championship meet was conducted at the Thetford Academy cross-country course as the participants battled the meteorological elements including mud and a wind that proved extremely challenging to the runners and was strong enough to damage a number of trees along the course, and

Whereas, to the surprise of many persons watching the Division II competition, U-32 proved to be the team to watch as the Raiders defeated Washington County rival Harwood Union High School 43-46 and captured the championship title, and

Whereas, this unanticipated result reversed the season-long string of Harwood victories over U-32, and

Whereas, headlining the U-32 triumph at this stormy event was the first‑place finish of junior Jeff Lusignan, and

Whereas, other top-ten-placing Raiders in this decisive five-kilometer race  were seniors Nick and Fran Mayforth and Richard Curtis, who completed the course in fourth, fifth, and ninth place, respectively, and

Whereas, the 2006 U-32 cross-country team also featured the outstanding running of senior Craig Boulanger, junior Ricky Hall, and freshman Reed Kimberly, and

Whereas, coaches Mark Chaplin and Kathy Topping worked diligently throughout the fall to prepare their team for the championship, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the U-32 Raiders 2006 Division II boys’ cross-country championship team, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Mark Chaplin and Kathy Topping at U-32 High School.
