Subject: Education; school lunches; milk; beef
Statement of purpose: This bill proposes to provide grants to school districts for one free eight-ounce serving of milk per day to any public school student and incentives to purchase local beef products.
AN ACT RELATING TO PROVIDING FREE MILK AND LOCAL BEEF TO ALL CHILDREN IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS
It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont:
Sec. 1. 16 V.S.A. § 1262a(c) is added to read:
(c) The state board shall, from funds available to the department of education for this subsection, award annual grants to each school district in the state sufficient to provide:
(1) one eight-ounce serving of milk on every school day of the year to any child enrolled in the district who requests it. If the grant to a district in any school year exceeds the amount actually expended by the district in that year, the district shall return the balance to the department on or before the 15th day of the next fiscal year to be used by the department for the purposes of this subsection; and
(2) funding to enable the school district to purchase locally raised and processed beef products.
Sec. 2. EFFECTIVE DATE
This act shall be effective beginning in the 2008–2009 academic year and after.
