Statement of purpose:  This bill proposes to: (1) require the Vermont state board of nursing to establish standards for licensed practical nursing applicants who have received appropriate training and performed nursing duties while enlisted in military service in lieu of completing a required educational program; and (2) require the office of professional regulation to report to the general assembly on whether an applicant for licensure or certification to practice a profession or occupation regulated by the office should be eligible for licensure or certification if he or she has received appropriate training and performed duties while enlisted in military service in lieu of satisfaction of a required educational program.

AN ACT RELATING TO NURSING AND MILITARY SERVICE

It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont:

Sec. 1.  26 V.S.A. § 1574 is amended to read:

§ 1574.  POWERS AND DUTIES

The board shall:

(9)  Establish by rule standards for licensed practical nursing applicants who have received appropriate training and performed nursing duties while enlisted in military service in lieu of satisfaction of those requirements set forth in subsection 1576(a) of this title; and

(10)  Adopt rules necessary to perform its duties under this subchapter.

Sec. 2.  OFFICE OF PROFESSIONAL REGULATION; REPORT

By January 1, 2009, the office of professional regulation shall file a report with the general assembly that evaluates whether an applicant for licensure or certification to practice a profession or occupation regulated by the office should be eligible for licensure or certification if he or she has received appropriate training and performed duties while enlisted in military service in lieu of satisfaction of a required educational program.
