Subject:  Court procedure; electronic access to criminal and family court records

Statement of purpose:  This bill proposes to prohibit the courts from allowing the general public to have unlimited electronic access to criminal and family court records.

AN ACT RELATING TO ELECTRONIC ACCESS TO CRIMINAL AND FAMILY COURT RECORDS

It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont:

Sec. 1.  12 V.S.A. § 5 is amended to read:

§ 5.  DISSEMINATION OF ELECTRONIC CASE RECORDS

The court shall not permit public access via the internet to criminal case records or family court case records.  The court may permit criminal justice agencies, as defined in 20 V.S.A. § 2056a, internet access to criminal case records for criminal justice purposes, as defined in section 2056a.
