Statement of purpose: This bill proposes to direct the commissioner of education, the chancellor of the Vermont state colleges, and the president of the Vermont student assistance corporation to develop and implement strategies to increase the number of secondary students who pursue postsecondary education or training.
AN ACT RELATING TO ENCOURAGING SECONDARY STUDENTS TO PURSUE POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION OR TRAINING
It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont:
Sec. 1. POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION AND TRAINING
To increase the number of skilled and educated individuals entering the workforce in Vermont, the commissioner of education, the chancellor of the Vermont state colleges, and the president of the Vermont student assistance corporation shall jointly develop strategies to encourage secondary students to pursue postsecondary education or training. Strategies shall focus on students who do not intend to pursue postsecondary education or training and who would benefit from enrolling in one of the Vermont state colleges or a training program located in Vermont. Strategies may include programs to increase opportunities for internships and other work-based learning experiences, to provide career exploration and planning services, and to encourage and assist students to complete college applications and financial aid forms.
