Subject: Taxation; income tax; credit for hiring released prisoners
Statement of purpose: This bill proposes to create an income tax credit for an employer who hires a recently released prisoner.
AN ACT RELATING TO TAX CREDIT FOR HIRING RELEASED PRISONERS
It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont:
Sec. 1. 32 V.S.A. § 5930xx is added to read:
§ 5930xx. INCOME TAX CREDIT FOR HIRING RECENTLY RELEASED
A taxpayer shall be entitled to a credit against the tax imposed under this chapter in the amount of four percent of the wages paid in the taxable year by the taxpayer to an employee first hired in the taxable year by the taxpayer and which employee was released from prison within the six months preceding the date of hire.
Sec. 2. EFFECTIVE DATE
This act shall apply to taxable years 2008 and after.
