Subject: Conservation; tourist information services; signs; exemptions
Statement of purpose: This bill proposes to: (1) only allow the posting of campaign signs for the periods of 14 days preceding and seven days following the primary and general elections; (2) only allow the posting of campaign signs on private land with the permission of the owner of the land; and (3) restrict the size of campaign signs to 10 square feet.
AN ACT RELATING TO THE POSTING AND SIZE OF CAMPAIGN SIGNS
It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont:
Sec. 1. 10 V.S.A. § 494 is amended to read:
§ 494. EXEMPT SIGNS
The following signs are exempt from the requirements of this chapter except as indicated in section 495 of this title:

(18)(A) Signs which:
(i) refer to a clearly identified candidate for office and that promote or support a candidate for office, or attack or oppose a candidate for office, regardless of whether the sign expressly advocates a vote for or against a candidate; or
(ii) promote or support or attack or oppose a public question.
(B) A sign under this subdivision (18) shall only be exempt from the requirements of this chapter:
(i) for the period of 14 days preceding and seven days following the primary election and the period of 14 days preceding and seven days following the general election;
(ii) if it is posted on private land with the permission of the owner of the land; and
(iii) if it does not exceed 10 square feet in area.
