Subject:  Education; minimum course of study; media literacy

Statement of purpose:  This bill proposes to add media literacy to the minimum course offerings required in public and independent schools and home study programs.

AN ACT RELATING TO REQUIRING PROGRAMS IN MEDIA LITERACY IN SCHOOLS

It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont:

Sec. 1.  16 V.S.A. § 906(b) is amended to read:

(b)  For purposes of this title, the minimum course of study means learning experiences adapted to a pupil's age and ability in the fields of:

(1)  Basic communication skills, including reading, writing, use and understanding of a variety of communications media, and the use of numbers;
