Subject:  Crimes and criminal procedure; breach of the peace; assisting an illegal immigrant

Statement of purpose:  This bill proposes to prohibit assisting a person whom the actor knows or reasonably should know is an illegal immigrant by:  transporting, sheltering, or aiding the person in obtaining employment; employing the person; or providing or renting housing to the person.  A violation would result in up to five years’ imprisonment or a fine of not more than $5,000.00, or both, and subject any of the defendant’s property involved in any of the illegal activity to forfeiture proceedings.

AN ACT RELATING TO ESTABLISHING FELONY CRIMINAL PENALTIES FOR ASSISTING ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS WITH OBTAINING EMPLOYMENT OR HOUSING

It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont:
