Subject: Crimes and criminal procedure; larceny and embezzlement; removal of government‑issued signs
Statement of purpose: This bill proposes to increase the penalties for the removal of signs issued by the state or a municipality.
AN ACT RELATING TO PENALTIES FOR THE REMOVAL OF GOVERNMENT‑ISSUED SIGNS
It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont:
Sec. 1. 13 V.S.A. § 2510 is added to read:
§ 2510. REMOVAL OF SIGNS ISSUED BY THE STATE OR A MUNICIPALITY
A person who removes from a state or town highway, a commercial or municipal building, or a private residence any of the following signs shall be fined not more than $1,500.00:
(1) A sign issued by the state enhanced 9‑1‑1 board pursuant to subdivision 7053(a)(3) of Title 30.
(2) A traffic control sign, signal, or marking issued pursuant to section 1025 of Title 23.
(3) A municipal sign issued pursuant to section 1029 of Title 23.
(4) An official directional sign posted for the purpose of providing tourist information pursuant to section 486 of Title 10.
