Whereas, Robert “Bob” Stiller, the founder and chair of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters in Waterbury, has a passion for developing innovative approaches to manufacturing and business management which began during his youth while assisting at his father’s Stillman Manufacturing in the Bronx, New York, and

Whereas, by the age of 12, he had learned to operate all of the company’s equipment, and, while still a high school student, he designed a machine that expedited the manufacturing process, and

Whereas, he attended the New York Military Academy and Syracuse University and graduated from Parsons College in Iowa, and

Whereas, in the late 1970s, he and a colleague established the E-Z Wider Company, and, while managing the company, he exhibited keen and decisive entrepreneurial skills, and

Whereas, in 1981, while living near the Sugarbush Ski Resort, Bob Stiller purchased an interest in a Waitsfield cafe called Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, subsequently purchasing the entire company, and

Whereas, despite some early financial challenges, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters has evolved into one of the premier small companies in the United States, and since 1993 has been a publicly traded company on NASDAQ with the moniker of GMCR, and

Whereas, in 2000, Fortune Magazine featured Bob Stiller as the publication’s Entrepreneur of the Year, and, in 2007, the company had  worldwide sales in excess of $340 million, and

Whereas, this producer and seller of high-grade and highly aromatic coffee operates from a social responsibility premise “motivated by a deep desire to learn to share and represent the best of corporate America,” and the company contributes five percent of its pretax profits to social and environmental causes, and 

Whereas, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters implements a social responsibility agenda through partnering with coffee-growing communities; supporting local communities; protecting the environment at its corporate headquarters, which are carbon neutral, through the use of electric cogeneration at its production plant, and in many manufacturing and retailing innovations; and promoting sustainable coffee through fair trade certification and carefully selected sourcing of where to purchase coffee, and

Whereas, the company has over 1,000 employees, and it has been recognized as a great place to work for its commitment to a collaborative work environment, wellness, livable wages, and holistic educational opportunities, and

Whereas, the success of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters has been boosted by the company’s purchase of Keurig Corporation, a manufacturer of individual cup coffee brewing machines, and

Whereas, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters has won numerous awards for its corporate leadership, and Bob Stiller and the company were profiled in a laudatory article in the July 2007 edition of Vermont Business Magazine, and

Whereas, in 2004, Bob Stiller, a licensed pilot, purchased Heritage Flight in Burlington and is continuing to create new jobs in the aviation industry, and

Whereas, in May 2007, he relinquished his daily executive duties at Green Mountain Coffee Roasters but continues to serve as chair of its board of directors and in guiding the company in brewing a better world, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly honors Robert Stiller for his entrepreneurial achievements and vision, and be it further

Resolved:  That the Secretary of State be directed to send two copies of this resolution to Green Mountain Coffee Roasters.
