NO. R-450.  House concurrent resolution congratulating Monique Simpson on being named the 2008 Boys & Girls Club Vermont Youth of the Year.

Whereas, the Boys & Girls Clubs take great pride in encouraging teenagers to participate in community programs that foster leadership and responsibility and teach them how to establish and achieve worthy life goals, and

Whereas, as a form of encouragement and recognition, local Boys & Girls Clubs designate a Youth of the Year from among teenagers who have been club members for at least two years, and these local winners serve as the outstanding pool of candidates from which a statewide honoree is chosen to represent Vermont nationally, and

Whereas, the winners of this award are chosen locally and statewide based on a rigorous review process that examines their club involvement, civic commitments, community service hours, and academic success as detailed in an essay they submit, and in a second essay the students explain how they have overcome personal obstacles and describe their local club’s role in helping them surmount these challenges, and

Whereas, in 2008, the nominee of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes, Monique Simpson, now a freshman at Vergennes Union High School (VUHS), was selected as the Vermont Youth of the Year, and

Whereas, she participated in many school and community organizations, serving 100 community hours through her role in the Keystone Club and the local prevention program for youth, and Monique is also the founder of a student committee at VUHS formed to address students’ rights with respect to lunch issues, and

Whereas, the Greater Boys & Girls Club of Vergennes selected Monique as the local Youth of the Year because she has overcome many challenges in her young life and simultaneously has demonstrated true leadership skills, and

Whereas, her record of community service and supporting essays impressed the panel of judges who reviewed candidates for the 2008 state award, and

Whereas, Monique’s interview with the panel reinforced its members’ high opinion of this young women and sealed the decision to designate her as the 2008 Vermont Boys & Girls Clubs Youth of the Year, and

Whereas, the state judges could not have made a better selection for this special form of recognition, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates Monique Simpson on being named the 2008 Boys & Girls Club Vermont Youth of the Year, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Monique Simpson and to Mike Reiderer, the executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Vergennes.
