Whereas, in November 1987, the Bennington Rotary Club decided to divide its territory in two, and on February 10, 1988, the Catamount Rotary Club was chartered, and

Whereas, the Catamount Rotary Club’s organizers took great pride in being one of the first Rotary clubs to include women as charter members, and

Whereas, membership in the Catamount Rotary Club has expanded from 35 to 65 individuals since its founding, and

Whereas, it has supported community improvement construction projects, starting with landscaping at the Bennington Free Library and most recently through assisting the Mount Anthony Middle School to develop a network of interpretive nature trails on its campus, and

Whereas, a number of worthy community events have benefited from Catamount Rotary Club members’ volunteer labor, including The Spirit of Sharing, the Bennington Hole-In-One Contest, the Bennington Battle Reenactment, and the Bennington Area Antique Car Show, and

Whereas, Rotary International’s special focus on education is reflected in the Catamount Rotary Club’s nearly $100,000.00 in scholarship grants awarded to persons pursuing postsecondary educational opportunities, and

Whereas, other recognition of young scholars has consisted of the $4,500.00 in prize money that the Catamount Rotary Club has awarded to Rotary speech contest winners, and

Whereas, the Catamount Rotary Club has organized foreign exchange programs, involving local and international students traveling in both directions, and

Whereas, the Rotary Interact Club, that both Rotary Clubs established at Mount Anthony Union High School, has fostered a relationship with Bennington’s sister city of Somotillo, Nicaragua, and the students’ support has been both financial and hands-on through field trips to work directly with the residents of that community, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the general assembly congratulates the Catamount Rotary Club on its 20th anniversary, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to the Catamount Rotary Club.
