NO. R-419. House concurrent resolution congratulating the State Street School in Windsor on winning the 2007 Fall Fit & Healthy Kids Challenge.

Whereas, according to the department of health’s most recently published statistics, approximately five percent of Vermont students in grades 9–12 are overweight or obese and an additional 4,100 are at risk to join their ranks, and
Whereas, in response to this problem, which has been developing for a number of years in Vermont and nationally, the Governor’s Fit & Healthy Initiative was established “to motivate students to make health lifestyle choices,” and
Whereas, a corollary project, the fall and spring Fit & Healthy Kids Challenge, was launched to “encourage schools to incorporate healthy eating and physical activity into academics including tracking daily fruit or vegetable consumption or minutes of physical activity logged each day,” and
Whereas, the winner of the 2007 Fall Fit & Healthy Kids Challenge is the State Street School in Windsor, which challenged students to record their walked mileage and to walk the length of the Long Trail (270 miles), and
Whereas, three students completed this goal by the February 2008 school break, and
Whereas, the challenge inspired many of the students to walk to school this past winter, and a group of six graders chose to made carrot, date, and apple cake and applesauce because these are healthy foods, and
Whereas, a delegation of students, teachers and parents from the State Street School will visit the state house on May 14 for an award ceremony, and the governor will present a $500.00 check to the school to create more opportunities for healthy activities, and he will visit the students in Windsor, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly congratulates the Windsor State Street School on winning the 2007 Fall Fit & Healthy Kids Challenge, and be it further
Resolved: That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to the State Street School in Windsor.
