NO. R-412.  HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING DR. MARSHALL LAND OF SHELBURNE ON BEING NAMED THE FIRST R. JAMES MCKAY JR. M.D. GREEN & GOLD PROFESSOR IN PEDIATRICS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT'S COLLEGE OF MEDICINE.

Whereas, one of Vermont’s truly outstanding pediatricians is Dr. Marshall Land, who is affectionately known as Buzz to his colleagues at the University of Vermont’s College of Medicine and in private practice, and

Whereas, Marshall Land graduated from Dartmouth College with the goal of pursuing a medical career, and in furtherance of this objective, he traveled to Ohio and enrolled at the University of Cincinnati College of  Medicine earning an M.D. degree in 1972, and

Whereas, the newly minted physician decided to enter the field of pediatrics with its opportunities to help children begin their lives in the healthiest possible way and to diagnose medical problems as early as possible, and

Whereas, his initial step in his career specialization was to complete an internship in pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and

Whereas, longing to return to New England, Dr. Marshall Land broadened his knowledge of pediatric medical care through a residency in pediatrics at the Vermont College of Medicine’s Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, and

Whereas, his supervisors at the Vermont College of Medicine were impressed with this young physician’s proven abilities, naming him the resident of the year, and they invited him to join the college’s department of pediatrics’ clinical faculty as an instructor, and

Whereas, Dr. Marshall Land’s talents as a clinical faculty member at the Vermont College of Medicine did not go unnoticed, and he has risen through the ranks from a clinical instructor to a clinical professor, a status he was granted in 1995, and

Whereas, in addition to his role at the medical college, Dr. Marshall Land has practiced with the Pediatric Medicine group in South Burlington, and

Whereas, he has been active in many professional associations and the recipient of numerous accolades, including the Vermont College of Medicine’s Dean’s Primary Care Teaching Award, and

Whereas, this extraordinary pediatrician has now the special career honor of being named the Vermont College of Medicine’s first R. James McKay Jr. M.D. Green & Gold Professor in Pediatrics, a position honoring the college’s first full-time faculty member in pediatrics and funded from a dedicated endowment whose objectives are “to maintain and enhance the excellence in pediatric medical education, clinical care and research that McKay pioneered,” now therefore be it


Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the general assembly congratulates Dr. Marshall Land on being named the first R. James McKay M.D. Green & Gold Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Vermont’s College of Medicine, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Dr. Marshall Land.
