NO. R-398.  House concurrent resolution congratulating the Mount Anthony Union High School 2008 Lady Patriots’ Division I girls’ basketball championship team.

(H.C.R.271)

Offered by:  Representatives Morrissey of Bennington, Botzow of Pownal, Corcoran of Bennington, Krawczyk of Bennington, Miller of Shaftsbury and Mook of Bennington

Offered by:  Senator Sears

Whereas, the Mount Anthony Union High School (MAUHS) Division I Lady Patriots girls’ basketball team learned that a state championship is never a foregone conclusion, even for the defending title holders, and

Whereas, the Lady Patriots played convincingly during the winter, earning the No. 3 playoff tournament seed and sported a 20–3 record after they secured a much-coveted berth in the 2008 Division I championship game, and

Whereas, at the University of Vermont’s Patrick Gymnasium, the Lady Patriots encountered the No. 5-seeded Champlain Valley Union High School (CVUHS) Redhawks who also had similar championship dreams, and

Whereas, the Lady Patriots started the evening with a solid 11–2 scoring salvo, and despite the Redhawks narrowing the gap to seven points, with only 11 seconds remaining in the first half, MAUHS retired from the court at half time with a comfortable 31–21 lead, and

Whereas, early in the third quarter, the Lady Patriots padded their advantage to 14 points, but the Redhawks shot back with 13 of the quarter’s 17 final points, reducing the MAUHS margin to five points, 39–35, as the teams entered the last and most dramatic quarter of play, and

Whereas, CVUHS’ offensive spark continued into the fourth quarter as it narrowed the Lady Patriots’ lead to 39–38 with seven minutes to play, but 21 seconds later, Michelle King (MAUHS’ high scorer with 19 points) executed a three-point play that temporarily halted the Redhawks’ scoring surge, and

Whereas, a determined CVUHS team again threatened to derail the Lady Patriots’ championship aspirations as it reduced the MAUHS lead to 50–48 with 48 seconds of regulation play remaining, and

Whereas, Kayla Whitman’s timely pass to Kourtney Hewitt, who immediately scored on a lay up, began a final scoring push, assuring an MAUHS 56-48 win, and its second consecutive Division I girls’ basketball state championship title, and

Whereas, Lady Patriots Chelsea Allard, Lizzie Curtin, Kasey Frasier, Alyssa Herrington, Kourtney Hewitt, Michelle King, Amber Legacy, Jhonny Mahar, Alyssa Porter, Bree Ripley, Courtney Saheim, Rebecca Sklepowicz, and Kayla Whitman were delighted with this hard-fought victory, and

Whereas, head coach Leo Reynolds and assistant coaches Bill Martin and Courtney Ludwig directed the Lady Patriots well through the challenging final quarter, and the team’s manager, Hannah Cross, was always rooting her classmates to victory, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the Mount Anthony Union High School 2008 Lady Patriots Division I girls’ basketball championship team, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Leo Reynolds at Mount Anthony Union High School.
