Whereas, the National Society of Professional Engineers and its Vermont counterpart, the Vermont Society of Professional Engineers, encourage middle school students to explore the intricacies of the mathematical universe through participation in the MATHCOUNTS competition, and

Whereas, for a quarter century, students in grades 6–8 have tested their numeric knowledge in algebra, factorials, geometry, probability, and statistics in both written examinations and fast-paced oral matches, and

Whereas, in Vermont, 89 students competed in the 2008 MATHCOUNTS competition for both team and individual honors, and

Whereas, the individual winners who will represent Vermont at the national MATHCOUNTS competition in Denver are Kevin Wang

(1st place-Frederick H. Tuttle Middle in South Burlington), Stuart Guertin (2nd place-Middlebury Union Middle School), Neil Guertin (3rd place-Middlebury Union Middle School), and Kate Candon (4th place-Rutland Middle School), and Kevin Wang and Neil Guertin finished first and second in the separately scored countdown rankings, and

Whereas, in the team competition the top scorer was the Middlebury Union Middle School team of Will Conlon, Sam Lessing, Neil Guertin, and Stuart Guertin, and coach Diane Guertin, who will coach the Vermont team at the national competition; the second-place winner was the Williston Central School team of Sam Brown, Liam Kelley, Conor McQuiston, and Gregory Meyer and coach Laura Meyer; the third-place finisher was the Fredrick H. Tuttle Middle School team of Austin Goddard, Neharika Khandavalli, Kevin Wang, and Cody Yu and coach John Radimer; and the fourth-place finalist was the Rutland Middle School team of Kate Candon, David Cohen, Renée Cruise, and Josh Wright and coach Josh Bunker, and

Whereas, all of these students and coaches merit praise for their commitment to academic excellence, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the general assembly congratulates the winners in the 2008 Vermont MATHCOUNTS competition and wishes the members of the Vermont national MATHCOUNTS team the best of success, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to the four MATHCOUNTS winning teams and to each of the four individual winners.
