NO. R-383.  House concurrent resolution congratulating the Gaines Farm on its receipt of a 2008 Vermont Centennial Business Award.

(H.C.R.257)

Offered by:  Representatives O’Donnell of Vernon and Pillsbury of Brattleboro

Whereas, the Vermont Centennial Business Awards are presented each year under the joint sponsorship of the Vermont secretary of state, the Vermont Business Magazine, and the Vermont Chamber of Commerce, and

Whereas, these special commendations recognize businesses that have endured for at least a century and, through their longevity in our state, have made historic and ongoing contributions to the vitality of Vermont’s economy, and

Whereas, one of the 2008 winners of this prestigious honor is Gaines Farm, situated on Route 5 in Guilford, and

Whereas, Gaines Farm would merit a bicentennial award if one existed because the Gaines family’s history of continuously operating the farm dates back 226 years to its establishment in 1782, and

Whereas, the farm’s early operations were centered on maple sugaring, wood harvesting, and milking the family’s herd of dairy cows, and, in 2008, these same core activities remain the centerpiece of its operations, and the family now owns 110 Holstein cows, of which 65 are milkers, and

Whereas, any rendition of the Gaines Farm’s story would be remiss without mentioning the wonderful hayrides it offers for public enjoyment, and

Whereas, in 2008, the eight generations of the Gaines family, including Robert Jr. and Jacqueline Gaines and their three sons Joel, Kyle, and Bradley, who constitute the ninth generation, are proudly maintaining the family’s deep agricultural roots in southern Windham County, and the family’s seventh generation leader, Robert Sr., died on March 16, less than two weeks before this award was presented on March 27 at a state house ceremony, and

Whereas, the continuity of the Gaines Farm represents the epitome of Vermont’s strong family agriculture traditions, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the Gaines Farm on its receipt of a 2008 Vermont Centennial Business Award, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Robert and Jacqueline Gaines at their family farm in Guilford.
