NO. R-377.  House concurrent resolution congratulating the 2008 Twinfield Trojans Division IV championship girls’ basketball team.

Offered by:  Representative Ancel of Calais

Whereas, since 1992, the Division IV Twinfield Trojans girls’ basketball team had not won a state crown, although they came close in 2007 when they played their Route 2 rival, the Danville High School Indians, in the championship game, and

Whereas, the same two teams returned to the Barre Auditorium for the 2008 Division IV championship with the No. 1-seeded Trojans carrying a 22–2 record into the pivotal contest, and

Whereas, in a tightly played game, in which emotions and excitement ran high on both sides, the two teams’ similar strengths were apparent in Danville’s slight 37–35 halftime lead, and

Whereas, a similar balance between the two squads, with a greater emphasis on their defensive skills, persisted through the second half, and

Whereas, with Danville ahead 50–47 and only 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter, the Trojans’ game high scorer, Vanessa Powers, narrowed the gap to 50–49, and

Whereas, in a finale that no sports fiction author could top, Twinfield’s Betsy Martin passed the ball to Trojan senior Camille duPont, who was concluding her 1,000-point high school career, and

Whereas, with the clock now counting down the contest’s last seconds, duPont outwitted the Danville defense and, to a crescendo of Twinfield cheers, executed her signature pivot shot, giving the Trojans a dramatic 51–50 game victory and the 2008 Division IV girls’ basketball championship, and

Whereas, this wonderful season of Twinfield basketball was the result of a coordinated team effort to which Becca Chodorkoff, Camille duPont, Raven Gile, Stella Leach, Mallorie Lyford, Betsy Martin, and Kyla Potter, Vanessa Powers, Ciara Roberts, Emma Sanford, and Nelsa Welch each made a significant contribution, and

Whereas, coach Deb Rathburn and assistant coach Phil Carpentier instructed these young women when to play strategically or spontaneously, enabling the Trojans to maximize the strengths of the squad’s extremely talented roster of players, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the 2008 Twinfield Trojans Division IV championship girls’ basketball team, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Deb Rathburn at Twinfield High School.
