NO. R-364.  House concurrent resolution congratulating the 2008 Woodstock Union High School Wasps boys’ championship alpine ski team.

Offered by:  Representative Clarkson of Woodstock

Offered by:  Senators Campbell, McCormack and Nitka

Whereas, during the winter of 2008, Woodstock Union High School’s boy alpine skiers demonstrated their mastery of a sport that is a fundamental part of Vermont’s athletic culture, and

Whereas, the state alpine skiing championship tournament, which is composed of morning giant and afternoon slalom competitions, was staged this year at the Burke Mountain ski resort in the Northeast Kingdom, and

Whereas, a critical challenge was freezing rain that fell in the morning and had the potential of causing the slopes’ surfaces to become extremely slippery, and

Whereas, when the giant slalom portion of the competition concluded, Woodstock was in third place, trailing 24 points behind the first-place leader, Burr and Burton Academy, and

Whereas, several Wasp skiers experienced difficulties during the giant slalom run, including Austin Kolb, who lost a ski passing through the second gate and tumbled to the bottom of the course’s steep pitch, badly bruising his knee, and

Whereas, despite these obstacles, the Wasps rebounded during the two rounds of slalom competition, and most notable was the strong skiing of Austin Kolb who earned third place individual honors in the slalom, and

Whereas, fellow Wasp Colton Blackman’s 10th-place slalom finish was another major factor in Woodstock’s second consecutive boys’ alpine skiing state championship with 112 points, a 20-point advantage over second-place finalist Rutland, and

Whereas, the great efforts this winter of all the Wasp boy alpine skiers, including Sean Bjornsson, Austin Blackman, Colton Blackman, Henry Farrand, Ian Ford, Charles Harris, Charles Kimbell, Austin Kolb, Benn Mapes, Brogan McGrath, and Roy Salguero, made 2008 a memorable season on the slopes for Woodstock, and

Whereas, head coach Bill McCollom and volunteer coach Steve Foley enabled this talented boys’ alpine ski team to meet its fondest hopes and win a second consecutive state championship, now therefore be it
