NO. R-345.  Senate concurrent resolution congratulating the 2008 Rutland High School Raiders girls' alpine skiing championship team.

By Senators Mullin, Carris and Maynard,

By Representatives Andrews of Rutland City, Courcelle of Rutland City, Flory of Pittsford, Howard of Rutland City, McCormack of Rutland City and McNeil of Rutland Town,

Whereas, as the defending 2007 state champions, the Rutland High School Raiders’ girls alpine skiing team was well acquainted with the finesse and speed required to stay competitive in this fast-paced winter sport, and

Whereas, on an unusually mild February morning, girl high school alpine skiers gathered at Bromley Mountain in Manchester to match their talents in both the giant slalom and slalom races and determine the champion in girls’ alpine skiing for 2008, and

Whereas, in the giant slalom race, the combined scores of the individual Rutland competitors, including the eighth- and ninth-place finishes along with three other placements in the top 20, gave Rutland a 30-point advantage over second-place St. Johnsbury Academy, and

Whereas, in the afternoon slalom competition, Rutland skiers achieved both the fourth and the ninth fastest times, and the balance of the Raiders in the race turned in respectable 11th, 14th and 20th place finishes, and

Whereas, these commendable results added up to the best overall score for any of the teams, and Rutland High School became the proud winner of its second consecutive state championship in girls’ alpine skiing, and

Whereas, all of the young women who skied as members of this winter’s fantastic Rutland High School Raiders girls’ alpine skiing team, including Karly Acker, Caitlin Bliss, Samantha Boles, Erin Bucksbaum, Katherine Carey, Sarah Guth, Molly Quinn, Nell Reis and Amanda Thomas, displayed great athletic skill and a cooperative team effort, and

Whereas, this win was especially memorable for coach Greg McClallen whose coaching career of 42 years, including 36 at Rutland High School, concluded with this state championship, as well as coach Chris Hurka, and

Whereas, in recognition of his enormous contribution to the advancement of youth alpine skiing in Vermont and as a special farewell from his colleagues, coach McClallen was given the usual honor of setting the slalom course for the afternoon’s competition, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the 2008 Rutland High School Raiders girls’ alpine skiing championship team, and be it further

Resolved:  That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Greg McClallen at Rutland High School.
