NO. R-337.  House concurrent resolution in memory of Charlie Bristow.

Whereas, Charlie Bristow was a teacher, a mentor, a Vermonter by choice, a lawyer, a judge, a state official, a legislative employee, a father and grandfather, a husband, and a friend, and

Whereas, he was born in Mississippi, grew up in the Crescent City of New Orleans, and graduated from Tulane University Law School, and

Whereas, while a student at Tulane, he met and married Claudia Horack, and

Whereas, after a number of years of private sector legal employment in New Orleans, Charlie Bristow, his wife Claudia Bristow, and their three sons, Allan, Ben, and Brian relocated to central Vermont, and

Whereas, in New England, Charlie Bristow pursued two career paths, public service and academia, of which he sought in the first to serve the citizens of Vermont and in the second to instruct aspiring lawyers in the technical and reasoning skills required to practice law, and

Whereas, Charlie Bristow was employed in all three branches of Vermont state government, serving in the executive branch as both an assistant and a deputy attorney general and as commissioner of public safety; in the judicial branch as a district court judge, and finally, he brought his abundant experience to the position of legal counsel for the judiciary committees in the General Assembly, and

Whereas, during his legal career, he took a hiatus from public service to teach on the faculties of Vermont Law School and New England School of Law, where his expertise in the field of evidence proved invaluable, and

Whereas, Charlie Bristow had a remarkable zest for exploring life as demonstrated in the diverse hobbies in which he engaged, and

Whereas, few persons can claim to have run in marathons, hiked the Long Trail, sailed on Caspian Lake, scuba dived in the waters off Mexico, taken airplane piloting lessons, earned a ham radio license, delighted in birding excursions to the Georgia Sea Islands, amassed a book collection that would be the envy of many bibliophiles, and, despite all these endeavors, find time to create culinary delights in their kitchen, and

Whereas, the warmth and kindness with which Charlie Bristow treated others was an inherent part of his personality, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family of Charlie Bristow, and be if further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Claudia, Allan, Ben, and Brian Bristow.
