Whereas, although volunteer firefighters are often younger individuals, as the physical requirements of the position are demanding and stressful, there are some firefighters whose skill and stamina are sustained for many decades, and

Whereas, outstanding examples of hale and hardy firefighters, and their tenure in the department, are extraordinary 50‑year-plus active Bennington Fire Department members:  Irv Gardner (62 years), Richard “Dick” Hollister (57 years), Charles “Chuck” Sawyer (56 years), Francis “Butch” Corbett (55 years), and the three outstanding most recent additions to this exclusive public safety protection fraternity:  Erwin Mattison (51 years), Ormal Pierce (50 years), and John Stone (51 years), and

Whereas, each of these dedicated persons can trace his personal firefighting history to the era when Bennington’s firefighting services were provided by several firefighting companies, and

Whereas, Erwin Mattison, who is a Korean War veteran and a long-time active member of the local Moose lodge, began his firefighting career with the former Eagle Hose Fire Company No. 4, for which he served as chief until it became part of the unified Bennington fire fighting force, and he and his late wife’s, Dorothy’s, children and grandchildren reside in the Bennington area, and

Whereas, Ormal Pierce, an avid Little League baseball enthusiast, has for over 40 years served as a respected coach and umpire in Bennington, and his firefighting career also began at the former Eagle Hose Fire Company No. 4, and he continued as a firefighter when the local firefighting companies were unified, and he and his wife, Frances, are the proud parents of several children and grandchildren, and

Whereas, John Stone, who is a former veteran member of the Bennington board of civil authority and has belonged for many years to both a local Elks lodge and the Knights of Columbus, started his tenure as firefighter volunteering for the former Putnam Hose No. 3, and he has remained a Bennington firefighter since the departmental unification, and he and his wife, Jean have a large family of children and grandchildren who reside across the United States, and

Whereas, each of these exemplary public servants, and especially the three outstanding most recent additions to this exclusive public safety protection fraternity, will be most deservedly honored at the Bennington Fire Department’s Ladies’ Night Dinner Dance to occur on Saturday, March 15, 2008, now therefore be it


Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates Erwin Mattison, Ormal Pierce, John Stone, Irv Gardner, Richard Hollister, Charles Sawyer, and Francis Corbett for their history of outstanding community service and enduring longevity as Bennington firefighters, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to each of the individual Bennington firefighters named in this resolution.
