NO. R-321.  House concurrent resolution congratulating Howard Herrington on being named the 2007 Wal-Mart Vermont Teacher of the Year.

Whereas, annually, the Wal-Mart Corporation and Phi Delta Kappa, an international professional association for educators, jointly sponsor the local and state Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Awards, and

Whereas, in 2007, Diane Doucette, a parent of a Shaftsbury Elementary School student, wrote a letter to the Bennington Wal-Mart store nominating  the school’s physical education teacher, Howard Herrington, for a local Wal‑Mart Teacher of the Year Award, and

Whereas, in her letter, she described Howard Herrington as “very dedicated to all of the students at Shaftsbury Elementary School” and she continued, “the inspiration he gives our children with just a smile and the twinkle in his eyes is amazing,” and

Whereas, the persuasive argument presented to the Wal-Mart associates in Bennington noted Howard Herrington’s dedication to developing a vibrant and popular set of after-school athletic activities including many athletic pursuits, and

Whereas, in summarizing her choice, Diane Doucette stated that her candidate “is helping our community by giving our students the confidence they need to try new things and the motivation to reach their goals,” and

Whereas, the Bennington Wal-Mart associates were convinced that Howard Herrington deserved special recognition for his initiative as a teacher, and they selected him as their local award recipient, and

Whereas, the statewide jurors assigned the task of naming Wal-Mart’s 2007 Vermont Teacher of the Year agreed that Howard Herrington was the ideal winner for all the reasons described in the local nomination letter, and

Whereas, a surprised and profoundly moved Howard Herrington was officially named the 2007 Wal-Mart Vermont Teacher of the Year at a ceremony held at the Shaftsbury Elementary School that a large crowd of parents, school colleagues, and local dignitaries attended, and

Whereas, the school was presented a $10,000.00 grant in honor of the winner that can be used to advance its educational mission, and Howard Herrington was presented with a beautiful crystal apple trophy to commemorate the occasion, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates Howard Herrington of Shaftsbury on being named the 2007 Wal-Mart Vermont Teacher of the Year, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Howard Herrington and to Gary Netsch, the principal of the Shaftsbury Elementary School.
