Whereas, Dan Davis’s remarkable career in Vermont law enforcement has spanned more than three decades, and

Whereas, although he began a career path as an elementary school educator, earning a degree in that field from Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts, Dan Davis subsequently completed a master’s degree in criminal justice at Northeastern University, and

Whereas, he gained firsthand knowledge enforcing the state’s criminal statutes as a member of the Vermont state police, serving 11 years as a state trooper and then two years on direct assignment to the Windham County state’s attorney’s office, and

Whereas, after graduation from Western New England School of Law, Dan Davis assumed a new role in that office as a Windham County assistant state’s attorney, and

Whereas, in 1988, Dan Davis became Windham County state’s attorney, and remained that county’s chief prosecutor until 2007, and

Whereas, during his two decades as Windham County state’s attorney, his office prosecuted between 45,000 and 50,000 cases, the highest number of any county in the state, and

Whereas, he argued the full breadth of criminal cases, including murder, but Dan Davis took the greatest pride in his efforts to separate children from domestic abuse situations, and

Whereas, Dan Davis’s reputation for excellence earned him a place on both the Democratic and Republican lines on the election day ballot, and

Whereas, after two decades of outstanding prosecutorial leadership, Dan Davis retired as Windham County state’s attorney in September 2007, having won high praise from his professional colleagues, elected officials, and citizens throughout Windham County, and

Whereas, Dan Davis plans to remain active in the legal profession and to pursue his challenging special personal odyssey to climb to the highest point of every state in the union, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly honors Dan M. Davis on the conclusion of his honorable law enforcement career as both a state police officer and the Windham County state’s attorney and extends to him best wishes in his future pursuits, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Dan Davis in Bellows Falls.
