Whereas, Elizabeth (Liz) Daley Jeffords was a woman endowed with an independent spirit, a zest for life, and an irrepressible sense of humor, and

Whereas, Elizabeth Cecile Daley was born into a large Burlington family in 1939 and was the eighth of ten children, and

Whereas, she developed a rebellious streak early in life, often not conforming to the etiquette expected of young women of the 1950s, and

Whereas, at age 18, Liz Daley was employed in Burlington as a travel agent when she was paired on a blind date with a young navy man named James Merrill Jeffords, and

Whereas, despite their differences, the most obvious of which was their political party allegiances (Liz Daley was a Democrat and Jim Jeffords a Republican), they shared a mutual attraction and married in 1961, and

Whereas, their relationship was always fraught with challenges as demonstrated when they separated and divorced in the late 1970s, and

Whereas, the strength of the Jeffords’ mutual love and commitment endured, and they remarried in 1986 on the date of their 25th anniversary, and

Whereas, notwithstanding their sometimes conflicting perspectives on the political scene, Liz Jeffords was her husband’s most enthusiastic, effective, and active supporter, and she worked intensively on his successful political campaigns for the Vermont Senate from the Rutland district, for Vermont attorney general, for the U.S. House of Representatives, and for the U.S. Senate, and

Whereas, she was happiest when at home in Shrewsbury where she could garden and enjoy the peaceful life of rural Vermont, and

Whereas, when the ovarian cancer that Liz Jeffords had battled several times reemerged with a vengeance this winter, she exercised her independence one last time, departing this world on terms of her own choosing, and 

Whereas, Senator Jeffords, their children, Leonard and Laura, their grandchildren, and the entire state of Vermont mourn with great sadness the death on Friday, April 13, 2007 of Elizabeth Daley Jeffords, and

Whereas, there will be a celebration of her life on Saturday, April 21, 2007, at Grace Congregational Church in Rutland, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly extends its deepest and most profound sympathy to Senator James Jeffords and his entire family on the loss of this dedicated and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and quintessential Vermonter, Elizabeth Daley Jeffords, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send copies of this resolution to Senator James Jeffords and his children, Leonard and Laura.
