Offered by:  Representative Kupersmith of S. Burlington

Whereas, in an era of jet travel and instantaneous worldwide communications, today’s students need to be well acquainted with the international map, and

Whereas, in 1991, at the time many newly independent nations were emerging in Eastern Europe, and international geography assumed a new importance, a group of K–12 teachers, college faculty, and other citizens interested in the promotion of geographic literacy established the Vermont Geography Alliance (VGA) which is aligned with similar organizations nationwide, and

Whereas, the VGA receives financial support from the National Geographic Society and in-kind support from both the University of Vermont and St. Michael’s College, and

Whereas, annually, the VGA stages two large events that enable students from across the state to demonstrate their geographic knowledge and ingenuity, and

Whereas, the Geography Fair, to be held at the Memorial Auditorium in Burlington on the morning of Friday, March 30 will feature students’ exhibits on geographic topics involving countries around the globe, and

Whereas, following the geography fair, in the afternoon, the Vermont finals of the National Geographic Society’s Geography Bee will occur on the University of Vermont campus, and

Whereas, this nationwide academic contest is “designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography,” and

Whereas, the Vermont state winner will earn the chance to participate in the national finals to be held in Washington, D.C., and

Whereas, these events will make Burlington the center of geographic knowledge in Vermont on Friday, March 30, and

Whereas, both the geography fair and bee are constructive, informative, and exciting events for the student participants, now therefore be it
