NO. R-82.  House concurrent resolution honoring the community spirit of the Rutland city fire department.

Offered by:  Representatives Howard of Rutland City, Andrews of Rutland City, Courcelle of Rutland City and McCormack of Rutland City

Whereas, the Rutland city fire department is charged with the fire protection responsibilities for one of the state’s largest and most urbanized municipalities, and

Whereas, the city’s firefighters perform their duties around the clock under often difficult circumstances, and on occasion they exhibit acts of heroic bravery, and

Whereas, during the one-year period beginning February 1, 2006, the department responded to many types of situations, including:  fires (10.29%); overpressure, rupture, explosion, and overheating (0.42%); rescue and emergency medical service (3.68%); hazardous condition (13.88%); service call (53.75%); good intent call (6.75%); false alarms and false call (9.46%); severe weather and natural disaster (0.09%); and special incidents (1.68%), and

Whereas, despite the intensity and uncertainty of Rutland city firefighters’ daily schedule of public safety protection duties, they organize a large number of charitable and community programs that improve and brighten the lives of many individuals, and

Whereas, those outreach projects most directly related to the department’s traditional public protection role include conducting a safety fair at the Rutland Regional Medical Center, spraying area Christmas trees to prevent the development of fire hazards, and hosting an appreciation day to thank the many members of volunteer safety departments throughout Rutland County, and

Whereas, during the holiday season in December, the department is responsible for the distribution requirements of Teddy Bears for Tots at the Rutland Regional Medical Center and adopts a low income family to which it provides support, and

Whereas, on the medical front, the Rutland city fire department hosts an annual cancer walk to raise research dollars, and

Whereas, local students benefit from scholarship grants the department offers to those persons pursuing public safety-related studies, and

Whereas, perhaps most broadly visible among the department’s outreach activities are the department’s beautification promotion program and its annual promotion of and escort support for the Killington Classic Motorcycle Rally, and

Whereas, the breadth of the Rutland city fire department’s public service roles is extremely impressive, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
