Whereas, prior to Tom Slayton’s appointment in 1985 as editor of Vermont Life magazine, this Montpelier-based journalist worked in the hectic world of daily newspapers as a reporter and editor for the Rutland Herald, Barre‑Montpelier Times Argus, the Vermont Press Bureau, and, for a decade, he also served as the Boston Globe’s Vermont correspondent, and

Whereas, Tom Slayton’s experience as an arts writer is reflected in the many entertaining, informative, and colorful articles that have been published in Vermont Life magazine on the lively and diverse Vermont arts scene, and his book on Sabra Field also reflects his artistic acumen, and

Whereas, his much praised editorial leadership has spanned the terms of both Democratic and Republican governors, including Governors Kunin, Snelling, Dean, and Douglas, and under his dedicated leadership, the magazine has won nearly 100 national awards, and

Whereas, his editorial colleagues beyond Vermont recognized Tom Slayton’s creativity and leadership talent when they elected him to serve as president of the International Regional Magazine Association, and

Whereas, Tom Slayton’s musings on all aspects of life in the Green Mountain State are now heard regularly as commentaries on Vermont Public Radio, and

Whereas, Tom Slayton has been awarded an honorary degree from Southern Vermont College, and the University of Vermont will confer a similar honor on him later this year, and

Whereas, the Fairbanks Museum presented Tom Slayton its Franklin Fairbanks Award in recognition of his “significant contributions to the advancement of the sciences and humanities on behalf of Vermont and its people,” and

Whereas, after over two decades, Tom Slayton is concluding his editorial leadership at Vermont Life, but he will continue his writing and editorial craft on new and exciting projects, pursue his love of hiking and skiing, and enjoy life with his wife, Elizabeth, and son, Ethan, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly honors retiring Vermont Life magazine editor Tom Slayton for his over two decades of outstanding editorial leadership at the magazine, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Tom Slayton in Montpelier and to the editorial offices of Vermont Life magazine.
