NO. R-70.  House concurrent resolution honoring Adeline Barker on the conclusion of her outstanding career at the Mountain Valley Medical Clinic.

(H.C.R.45)

Offered by:  Representatives Hube of Londonderry, Komline of Dorset, Livingston of Manchester, Obuchowski of Rockingham and Partridge of Windham

Offered by:  Senators Shumlin and White

Whereas, in 1972, a group of Londonderry area residents established the Mountain Valley Medical Council in order to improve local access to primary health care services, and

Whereas, in 1974, the council recognized the need to establish an administrative office as a prelude to the opening of a functioning medical clinic, and

Whereas, the council hired its first full-time employee, Adeline “Addy” Barker, to manage the daily workflow, and

Whereas, she was an ideal candidate for this position, having left nursing school in Arkansas, just short of graduation, to marry her military beau, Dick Barker, and

Whereas, they subsequently moved to his native state of Vermont, and

Whereas, her careful preparatory work played a large role in the successful  1976 opening of the Mountain Valley Medical Clinic with an initial staff of three, including a physician, a nurse practitioner, and Addy, and

Whereas, during the next three decades, Addy Barker remained an integral member of the clinic’s administrative operations as the direct patient medical services offered to the community were expanded to include pediatrics, geriatrics, and internal medicine, and vital support services such as physical therapy, x-ray, bone densitometry, and laboratory analysis were added to the clinic’s menu, and

Whereas, as new challenges arose over the years, at this ever-growing medical facility, Addy met them effectively and cheerfully, and

Whereas, Addy Barker became an enthusiastic parishioner at the local Baptist Church, where she served as the organist for many years, as well as an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and

Whereas, before her recent retirement from the clinic’s staff in December 2006, her colleagues held a celebratory dinner to honor and thank her for the three-plus decades of loyal service she has provided the clinic and its patients, and

Whereas, although her beloved husband, Dick, has passed on, she will have the company of her daughters and the enjoyment of her church and fraternal work to keep her busy in the years ahead, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly honors Adeline Barker on the conclusion of her outstanding career at the Mountain Valley Medical Clinic, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Adeline Barker and to the Mountain Valley Medical Center in Londonderry.
